The Panik

The Paniks (frequently stylized on flyers and records as “The Panik”) were an active mid-1960s garage rock band hailing from Carpentersville, Illinois. They became a notable fixture in the competitive Chicago teen club circuit and were a definitive example of the mid-1960s Midwest “teen beat” phenomenon, transitioning from a group of high school friends into local celebrities.

The Breakthrough Contest
The band earned their biggest breakthrough in 1965/1966 by competing in the massive Talented Teens of the U.S. Contest held at Chicago’s McCormick Place. Competing against over a thousand regional youth groups, they placed in the top three. This high-profile exposure secured them an audition and a recording contract with Chicago International Studios.

The group’s signature sound—characterized by driving drums, fuzzy garage guitars, and aggressive, raw vocals—was created by five core members. The group’s active lineup shifted slightly over their 1960–1969 run but primarily consisted of:

Gary Nelson — Lead Guitar
Doug Akers — Bass Guitar
Bob Roak — Drums
John Latko / Tom Loubke (performing later as Tom McCann) — Rhythm Guitar

Before officially selecting “The Panik,” the teenagers briefly gigged under the name “The Classics”.

Discography & Music Style
The group captured a distinct mid-60s Midwest garage-surf energy. Today, original pressings of their singles are highly prized by regional garage-rock vinyl collectors.

Legacy and Compilations
Though they didn’t break out into mainstream national radio, The Paniks left a permanent mark on regional music history. Decades after they disbanded, their music was rediscovered by underground rock historians.

Their track “Can’t You See” was officially preserved on the celebrated garage-punk compilation album Vile Vinyl, Vol. 1, ensuring their place alongside the finest underground American bands of the era.

“Can’t You See” b/w “I’m Not Your Man” (1965/1966): Released locally on Orlyn Records (Orlyn 5525), this raw 45 RPM single remains their best-known footprint. “I Hate to Laugh Alone” b/w “Look Twice” (1966): Released on the Royal Blue label. Both tracks were penned by local Chicago producer and creator of Dharma Records, Perry Johnson. 

Where Are They Now?
The band formally parted ways in 1968/1969 as draft notices, college, and adulthood pulled the members in separate directions. Gary Nelson continues writing and performing music. Doug Akers passed his musical talents down to a new generation of musicians in his family, and rhythm guitarist Tom Loubke carved out a professional entertainment career in Las Vegas as Tom McCann.

From the beginning, the consistent band members were Dave Richardson – Lead Singer, Bob Roak – Drummer, Gary Nelson – Lead Guitar Player, Doug Akers – Bass Player. 

Other members over the years included; Dave Freier, Gary Caron, Tom Luebke

 We started in 1961 with different names at times and changed the name to The Paniks in 1963. The band performed together from 1961 – 1968.
