Robert G. King
August 23, 1933 – June 1, 2025 (Age 91)
Robert G. “Bob” King, age 91, a cherished member of the Algonquin community, peacefully passed away in the early hours of Sunday morning, June 1, 2025, at the Vines at Countryside in Elgin.
Born on August 23, 1933, in the quaint town of Bristol, Wisconsin, Bob was the beloved son of the late George R. and Gustava (née Stahl) King. As a young child, he briefly lived in Park Ridge, Illinois, before his family settled in Algonquin, where he would become an integral part of the community. His educational journey culminated in 1951 when he graduated from Dundee Community High School in nearby Carpentersville.
A dedicated member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Gilberts, Bob also held a special place in his heart for St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Algonquin, where he served faithfully as a longtime member and even took on the role of congregation chairman. His commitment to service extended beyond the church; for over 20 years, he proudly volunteered as a firefighter in Algonquin, exemplifying his dedication to the safety and well-being of his community.
In addition to his firefighting efforts, Bob was an accomplished businessman. He owned and operated King Chevrolet in Huntley for more than two decades, leaving a lasting impact on his customers and employees alike. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to create memorable experiences for families in the area, as he once owned The Putt-Putt Golf and batting cages in Algonquin with his brother Tom. Bob enjoyed fishing, bowling, and golf, and looked forward to his yearly family vacations to Minnesota. Bob had a love of flight. Later in life, he learned to be a pilot and even restored an airplane.
Bob’s legacy lives on through his beloved wife of 74 years, Marian Alberta King, whom he married on May 11, 1951. Together, they raised a beautiful family, including their children: Robert King Jr., Mary (Patrick) McGovern, Carolyn (Bob) Blase, Donna (Doug) King-Nykolaycuyk, and Julia (Michael) O’Brien. He took great pride in his family, which includes 20 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren, in addition to a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Bob especially cherished his monthly get-togethers with his classmates from his Dundee High School Class of 1951 Club, a testament to the lifelong friendships he treasured.
In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his beloved daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia and Michael Gillespie; his brother, Tom King; and his sister, Judith Krich.
Interment at Algonquin Cemetery in Algonquin.

My father, Robert (Bob) G. King, was co-owner (with my grandfather) of King’s Motor Sales in Algonquin from its early 50s founding until he bought King Chevrolet in Huntley in 1979 (his brother, Tom, took over after that), continuing until his retirement in 1999.
The Algonquin dealership was ‘Catty Corner’ from Simonini’s Restaurant at Routes 31 & 62, and he and the dealership were well known to many area residents. King Chevrolet in Huntley (1979-1999) was at Algonquin Road and Route 47, if you remember.
