John Van Dyke “ Tad “ Skillman
August 9, 1933 – August 23, 2021 (Age 88)
John Van Dyke “ Tad “ Skillman, age 88, of Carpentersville passed away surrounded by his children on Monday afternoon, August 23, 2021, at Advocate Sherman Hospital in Elgin.
John was born on August 9,1933 in Chicago and was the son of the late John Skillman and Charlotte C. (nee Steib) Brady. John was a resident of Carpentersville for the past 64 years and was a charter member of St. Monica Catholic Church in Carpentersville.
He began his professional career as a Police Officer in the Village of Carpentersville in the early 1960’s. During his tenure he earned the ranks of Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain, and Police Chief. He retired as Chief of Police in 1985 after 25 years of service to the Carpentersville Police Department. Following retirement from the Police Department, John served as a Carpentersville Trustee from 1985-1989 and later was elected Village Board President and served from 1989-1997. John was very involved within Dundee Township and served on School District # 300’s Board of Education from 1971-1983 and also served as former board President. He was an avid supporter of Irving Crown High School Booster Club and later the Dundee Crown High School’s Athletic Hall of Fame as a board member as well as an inductee. John was also a very proud United States Army veteran. He was all about service and was an excellent example of a true public servant.
Survivors include his children; Kathleen (Randy) Sellnow, Maureen (the late Michael) Harrison, John (Susan) and Robert (Marybeth) Skillman; his much loved and cherished grandchildren all whom he was very proud of; Matthew (Rebecca) Harrison, James (Molly) and Scott (Brittany) Sellnow, Jonathan (Larisa), Amanda, Van Dyke, and Callie Skillman. His great grandchildren; Riley, Bailey, Sean, Levi, Evan, Colin, and Arija. Other survivors include his sisters, Sally Murphy, Penny (Joe) Miller, and Bonnie (Bill Roesler) Wyman as well as many nieces, nephews and countless good and faithful friends especially Peggy Basura, his longtime companion.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 51 years; Rosemary Dooley Skillman on March 29, 2007, his sisters; Barbara Smith and Terry Dewey.
