Albert Benedict Huffman

December 12, 1932 – November 5, 2002 (Age 70)

Born Dec. 12, 1932, in Olney, Ill., to Georgia and A.O. Huffman, he died Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2002, at Sherman Hospital in Elgin. Interment will be in River Valley Memorial Gardens Cemetery, West Dundee.

Mr. Huffman graduated from Richland High School in Olney in 1951 and in 1955 was awarded his Bachelor of Arts degree in physical education and his teaching certificate from Eastern Illinois University.

He married his wife, Marie, in 1955, and was immediately drafted into the Navy, serving until 1957. After his military service he was hired by the Barrington Community Unit School District, began his teaching career at Sunny Hill Elementary School in 1957, and continued in 1959 at Hickory Hill Junior High School, where he taught and coached sports.

He later received his master’s degree in educational administration from Northern Illinois University and served as principal of Hickory Hill Junior High School from 1963 to 1976. In 1976 he transferred to Barrington Middle School-Station Campus, where he taught history until his retirement in 1997, completing a 40-year career in education.

Al was very active in the community and St. Catherine of Siena Church. He also served on the Dundee Township Library District board of directors and was elected to the board of commissioners of the Dundee Township Park District, serving from 1973 to 1996. He was very instrumental in the development of the Dundee Township Recreation and Fitness Center as well as parks and playgrounds, swimming pools, golf courses, the zoo, a township senior center and hundreds of programs. Al was also a basketball and football coach for the district and a baseball coach for the Tri-Cities Little League. He served in the Knights of Columbus at St. Catherine of Siena Church. He also enjoyed spending time with his family, working with stained glass, and sports, especially golf and fishing.

Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Della Marie Huffman (nee Tucker); son, Dr. Ronald (Mary Beth [nee Lechner]) Huffman of West Dundee; daughter, Michelle of West Dundee; brothers, John Huffman of Carbondale and Tom Huffman of Mattoon; and sister Georgia Page of Butson, Ala. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister Martha Harrell.
